Rules
Inheritance Forums Rules

Upon registering at the forums you agree to the following set of rules. Every time you make a post, you renew your commitment to follow the rules and any updates made to them. If you break a rule, you are subjected to any consequences that follow. Consequences can vary anywhere from an explanatory PM to a ban. Rules are subject to change at any time, and users are responsible for reviewing the rules periodically. We will post an all-forums announcement when there is a major revision.

Accounts

Each member may have ONE account. Creation of alternate accounts to avoid a ban or suspension will result in a permanent ban of the user. Creation of alternate accounts for any other reason (i.e. a new persona) will result in a ban of the new account and a full suspension of the original.

Do not share accounts. This is an inconvenience to other members and staff.

Upon registering, please choose an appropriate username. If your username is deemed inappropriate, an administrator will change it.

During registration, you will be asked for both a login name and a display name. The login name is used to access your account and the display name is your public identity. We do not accept name change requests, so make sure you like your display name.

Posting

When you post, make sure that your post contributes to the thread and that it remains on topic, as defined by the original post in the thread. If you are confused about the topic being discussed, please ask the creator of the thread via PM.

Please use proper English when you post. This includes using proper punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Do not use chat speak or ‘leet’. The use of proper English ensures that posts are easily read and understood by all members.

Do not troll or spam when you post. Trolling is the act of posting disruptive or annoying comments in order to start an argument, derail the thread, or to be deliberately disruptive. Spamming is the act of posting silly and/or low-content posts, posting off-topic, double-posting, or 'bumping' a thread in order to put it at the top of the list.

Low-content posting is only allowed in Forum Games and FTD.

Topics

When making a new topic, make sure that you post in the correct forum. Make sure that your topic will be interesting and generate discussion. All general non-Inheritance topics go in General Discussion in the Away From Inheritance category. If you would like to make a non-serious/humorous topic or post, post it in FTD. If you are unsure about where a topic should go or if it is appropriate, please PM a moderator or administrator.

Topics on politics, religion, and sexuality are only allowed in Mature Discussion.

Do not post topics about explicit material, pornography, any illegal activity, or warez.

Do not post topics advertising your website outside of The Advertising Hut. You must have 50 posts to access The Advertising Hut. If you cannot yet access it, it does not mean you can post advertisements elsewhere.

Private Messages (PMs)

Private messages are to be used in private exchange between members. You may not harass or flame other members nor may you send unsolicited advertising over private messages. Abuse of private messages may result in revocation of private message privileges.

Avatars

The maximum size for an avatar at the forums is 120 pixels by 120 pixels (120x120). The forum will automatically resize images larger than this.

Please make sure that all avatars are appropriate. Nudity, profanity, suggestive images or text, and any material that breaks other forum rules are not allowed in your avatar. Inappropriate avatars will be removed by staff without warning.

Signatures

You may have ONE image in your signature. The image may not exceed 500 pixels in width and 150 pixels in height. If you are unsure of the size, check the properties of the image or ask a staff member.

If you have an image in your signature, you may have THREE lines of normal-sized text or TWO lines of medium-sized text. If you do not have an image in your signature, you may have SIX lines of normal-sized text.

If you would like to include gifts or awards in your signature, you can either combine them into one image not exceeding the limit of 500x150, or link to them in a line of text.

Do not use large letters and/or all caps. Refrain from using 'glitter graphics'. These things are annoying and distracting.

Use quotation marks ("") instead of the [ quote ] tags.

Do not include offensive and/or inappropriate material.

Political and religious references are not allowed.

Do not include false or misleading links, or links to inappropriate content.

Do not put Dragcave eggs or similar items in your signature. These slow down load time.

All or part of a signature that violates the above signature rules may be removed by a staff member with or without notice.

Sectional Rules and Copyright Information

Certain areas of InheritanceForums may have additional or alternate rules as noted by moderators responsible for that section or administrators. In addition, sections of InheritanceForums that provide an avenue for the posting of personal artistic or creative work have specific licensing and copyright rules which are posted in the appropriate sections. All sectional rules or notifications will be provided in a pinned thread within the appropriate section, and are linked to below:

Cycle Section Rules (Applies to all Cycle forums.)

RPG Rules and RPG Character Rules

Writers’ Hangout Rules

Artists’ Hangout Rules

Graphics Rules and Guidelines

Mature Discussion Rules

Advertising Hut Rules

Please note that all Board Rules apply unless stated otherwise in sectional rules.

Disciplinary Action

In an effort to be fair to all parties, InheritanceForums operates on a largely case-by-case basis. There are three general tiers of disciplinary action that the staff of InheritanceForums reserves the right to use against any infractions of the above rules. If you have any questions regarding disciplinary policies or specific cases please feel free to PM the moderator responsible for either the section where the infraction occurred or for your case specifically. If you feel that the moderator cannot accurately or fairly respond to your concerns in a satisfactory manner, please PM an administrator listed below:

Head Administrator: Arthryn (Allison)
Administrators: Rinion or Charles

Warning

Warning is the lowest-level disciplinary action taken by a staff member. A warning is equivalent to a ticket or citation in the real world. Warnings are issued for minor infractions and are generally the first disciplinary step, though further steps may be taken at the discretion of the responsible staff member. A warning is permanent and is permanently visible to staff members on your warn log. Other users cannot view your warn log.

In some cases, a post suspension may be issued at the same as a warning. For information about post suspension, see below.

Suspension

There are two types of suspensions that are issued on InheritanceForums.

Post suspension is when a member’s posting privileges are revoked. The member can still access the board and use private messages. Post suspension is usually the first step after a warning. The length of the post suspension depends on the infraction and can last any length from a few hours to a few weeks.

Full suspension is when a member’s account is temporarily denied access from accessing the forums. Full suspension is used for severe infractions or after warning and post suspension have already been utilized. The length of a full suspension depends on the infraction and can last any length from a few days to a few months.

Banning

Banning is used as a final resort action on a member for whom all other routes of discipline have failed. When a member is banned, the member is permanently denied access to InheritanceForums. IP addresses of banned members will also be blocked from accessing the forums.

The InheritanceForums administrative and moderation staff reserve the right to exercise discretion in all punishments.

Conduct

All members are expected to act civilly and respectfully when posting on the forums. Flaming, harassment, and belittlement of other members and/or their opinions will not be tolerated. Respect the members of the staff. They all work hard to keep IF fun, civil, and organized, so insolence, disrespect, and mockery towards members of the staff will not be tolerated. Lastly, we realize that there are many differing opinions present on the forums, which is why it is important to respect each other and each other's opinions, even if you may disagree.

Reporting

If you see a post in which you feel a member is breaking the rules or acting inappropriately, please report the post. You can do this by clicking the ‘Report’ button at the bottom left of the post in question. All reports are confidential and can be viewed only by members of the staff.

Privacy Policy

InheritanceForums (henceforth referred to as 'IF') reserves the right to retain all information submitted to it for an indefinite period of time. Please be aware that all actions on IF are logged, including the IP addresses you use to access the forums. Your personal information, email addresses, or any other information submitted to IF will under no circumstances be sold or released to a third-party without your explicit consent. IF operates under the jurisdiction of the United States of America and is dedicated to complying with all applicable national law codes. IF reserves the right to track user activity on the forums through the use and storage of identifying information and legal web-cookie software. Information retained by IF is not in any way shared with third-party advertisers.

IF and its staff reserve the right to investigate your user activity under any circumstances if deemed necessary by a current member of the IF administration. IF and its staff will comply with all legal processes and investigations and reserves the right to release appropriate information to law-enforcement authorities to aid in active investigations in order to prevent illegal activities or as otherwise required by US law.

In compliance with the COPPA act, InheritanceForums requires that all users under the age of 13 identify themselves during registration and provide proof of parental consent in order to use this website. This precautionary measure requires the honest identification of underage parties and that said parties provide an accurate parental content. InheritanceForums, its staff, and its users are not responsible for the intentional circumvention of this measure by underage parties and explicitly warn against such circumvention.

All disciplinary actions taken by staff against members will remain in confidence between the staff and member in question so long as the member remains in good standing on InheritanceForums. If said member is permanently banned from InheritanceForums, that privilege is considered forfeit and the reasons for the ban and any prior disciplinary action may be shared by staff members in an effort to warn other members of inappropriate activity.

InheritanceForums and its identified staff members will attempt to provide a friendly, legal, and safe environment for all users, however due to the nature of the internet and forums software, said parties are not responsible for content posted by its members.

If you have any questions regarding your personal privacy, please contact an administrator (listed above).

Rule Updates and Acceptance

By registering and maintaining an account on InheritanceForums, you agree to abide by all posted rules and staff announcements. You further agree that it is the responsibility of identified staff members of InheritanceForums to interpret and enforce all posted rules and that said staff members have discretionary authority when applying the rules to all users. The decisions of a moderator may be appealed to an administrator, but all administration decisions are final and may not be ignored for any reason.

If the posted rules are updated, users will be notified with an announcement post. It is the responsibility of the user to read and understand all posted rules and updates, and ignorance of a rule will not be accepted as a defense. Exceptions, unless specifically noted, will not be made for users whose registration date is prior to a rule update.

Please follow all of these rules to ensure a safe and fun environment for all forum members. If you have any questions, feel free to email or PM an Administrator or Moderator.
