Hey all, this is the first story I've posted here. I just started this today. Here's the prologue. As I finish more, I'll post it.

Thanks for reading ).gif

Prologue: A letter from Orrin to readers

My name is Orrin, son of Larkin. I rule the country of Surda from our capital at Aberon. Generations ago, Surda seceded from the Empire. Our reasons were simple: Galbatorix had tightened his noose of oppression to the point where it became unbearable. We’d had enough. Under the leadership of the Langfelds, my family, a southern portion of the Empire broke away. We established a new country, Surda.

Due to my ancestry, I grew up as a prince. My father provided me with the best of tutors in history, science, and fighting. In the past, Galbatorix has tried to regain control of Surda, and he has failed due to the bravery and dedication of our troops and the talent of our leaders.

The extensive training I received gave me the ability to fight and win, but my true passion is learning about our world by “blowing smoke and playing with quicksilver,” as Nasuada so tactfully put it. I love solving problems that have puzzled both man and elf for decades. For instance, I recently proved the existence of a vacuum!

My duties as king are somewhat less enjoyable. Much of my day is taken up by dealing with hard-headed noblemen who flatly refuse to agree with anything I say. My Prime Minister, Irwin, calms them as much as possible, but some of them always insist on speaking to me, particularly if their quarrel with me concerns one of my decisions regarding our opposition to Galbatorix. Since we became involved in the struggle between the Varden and the Empire, there has been an influx of complaints. In any conflict, it is inevitable that some will want to give up. They say that we should never have entered the fight. It is worth noting that not a single one has changed their minds, even after our recent victories.

When I first heard of Eragon and Saphira, I was skeptical. There had been many rumors about new Riders, but that was all they were, rumors, until Eragon and Saphira appeared. Soon, I began to hear the name of Brom, founder of the Varden, in connection with the rumors. The use of his name lent a bit of credibility to the tales, and I wondered if they were true.

Then word reached me from the Varden that Eragon and Saphira had arrived in Farthen Dur. I was astounded. As much as we had hoped for a new Rider, one on our side, I’d never considered that it would happen in my lifetime.

Yours sincerely,
King Orrin of Surda
