Meh, I'd have to say that GIMP still can't compare to PS, at least in the regards I use it. I do a ton of work with digital photography, both my own stuff and studio shooting for school projects and stuff, and PS is unsurpassed at handling photographs. Besides, I got a fully legit, fully equipped CS2 for about $190 through educational licensing ($170 without additional fees) so it was a good deal. Besides, I'm all about streamlined interfacing, so again PS wins.
But it's really more a matter of what you want to do with the program and what you're comfortable with.

I have to agree about the price thing. Overall GIMP is better. Especially if you do mod it. (Its open source).
$700? Well maybe if thats what you do for a living. If I had 700 bucks to spend I'd put them into buying Maya Mod, then I'd be able to have a decent modelling program.
