I've found millions of tutorials on how to make renders, where to get renders and stuff, but what exactly is a render and how do you use it? All I know so far is that it's pretty much a picture or a pattern on a transparent background that is often used in sigs (and verts etc...)

Renders What's a render?

You're right when you say that it's an image on a transparent background. A render would be just a cutout of something that you want to use in your sig. It's usually easier to use, because it doesn't have a background in it, so you can create your own to match the sig.
If you need a visual example, I'll bring out a really cruddy render I made a long time ago. Here's the original picture that I used for it:

And here's the render that I made from it:

See how it doesn't have the stuff and the other guy in the background of the render that I made? That's what makes it a render.
Ok, and to defend myself on the minor suckiness of that render, it was a really hard image to render, and I made it last fall.
To use them gets a little more complicated. Truthfully you could just paste the render onto a sig-sized canvas in a photo editor and call it a signature. I pray to god that you do more to it than that, but that's just the basic explanation. I can't really explain how to use a render, because to do that I'd have to explain every part of sig making, and I don't really want to get into that. Go read tutorials and look at examples of other people's work and try to figure it out on your own. Post your work on here and we'll give you lots of nifty critique and help you get better.
Is that enough explanation on everything? Tell me if there's anything that makes absolutely no sense (which happens a lot when I speak) or something that you're still confused with, and I'll try to clarify or help you out.
