Humor in books Some books pull it off, some don't . . .

Which books have succeeded on the humor front for you? So many books try to inject humor, yet it sounds awkward and looks cheesy. On the other hand, some books can pull it off skillfully.

I'm putting the Bartimaeus Trilogy at the top of that list.

Personally, I don't like books that are meant to be comedies ("This zany tale will keep you guffawing to the end!" in the summary), because those often turn out to be cheesy and plot-weak, but those can be good too.

Agreed, the BT is a perfectly marvelous example. awesome-old.gif

I love the humor in the Belgariad. Silk, Belegrath, and numerous other charters are wonderfully hilarious. loleragon.gif

The Inheritance is funny. Sure, it isn't meant to be, but hey, does that really matter? awesome-old.gif

I found that Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, dresden files, and stupid history are pretty funny.

Oh, how could I forget Hitchhikers! Hilarious books. yes.gif

The Artemis Fowl are pretty amusing, as is Anne of Green Gables, in my opinion. Oh and would Calvin & Hobbes or Get Fuzzy count? awesome-old.gif

The Bartimaeus Trilogy is definitely one of my favorite. And the Maximum Ride series is up there too. Sarcasm and egoistic remarks makes the world go round and round!

^ I didn't find that especially funny, just once in a looooooong while.

Get Fuzzy!! If we're going into comics then I must confess to an addiction to old Dilberts. The newer ones stink in both art and jokes, but the old ones were great.

Someone knows Get Fuzzy?? Good, that means someone knows who/what my personal picture is. Bucket, if I recall correctly, thought Bucky was a sheep. rolleyes.gif

Harry Potter could be pretty funny at times, I give it that. yes.gif

True, but still. lol.gif It actually was pretty amusing at the beginning, but the amusing bits grew farther apart as the story progressed. I suppose that's because the series got more serious book by book.

I just looked that one up, and wow has Darby's style changed or what?? I have a book with his older comics in it, so Bucky looks all weird to me. lol.gif

Yup, BT is really the only story I have read that manages to have a "deeper meaning" and still retain hilarity.

Bucky's gotten kinda skinnier, and Rob looks reaaaaally different.

Seriously so. O_o Bucky's head is small. And all of their eyes got bigger.

DX I barely recognize them!

Oh well. Bucky is Bucky. awesome-old.gif My mom think he's like a male version of my cat,, but I disagree. At least Bucky has emotions. lol.gif

On the Barti Trilogy, yep. Bartimaeus is definitely the over-King of sarcasm. He wields it wonderfully, no? awesome-old.gif

But no, wait, it was so boring, wasn't it? At least according to someone around here eragonawesome.gif madgo.gif Something was wrong with that guy, Barti's thoughts were always much appreciated and skillfully inserted perfectly to meld with the story and keep it funny.

If the Bartimaeus Trilogy is as funny as you people say it is, then I really need to read it.

As for hilarious books, try Ranger's Apprentice and Harry Potter. Although, I laugh at almost anything that's remotely funny, so I'm not a very reliable judge.
