I think it would be great to test the writers a bit, to have them expand and break out of their comfort zones.
Anyone else agree?

I'd like to see one, although whether I'd be good enough to enter, I don't know... There are some pretty good writers here. Who would be judging? One of the mods...?

Why would it be tough for original content? Poetry would be nice too.
Would you guys prefer a more open competition?
What do you mean by a "more open competition"?
I think we could come up with a list of ideas for a writing competition. As long as we have a limit for however long our entries are, and a certain theme and what not...wouldnt that work out?
For example, we could write a short story that invokes in a reader a certain feeling (happiness, fear, love, anger); basically, it could be themes that could help a writer work on certain aspects of a story?
I dont know. You guys know better than I. But I have been wanting to see more of the creative minds of our writers for quite a while..

Why can't it be split up, like poems, fantasy, fan fic, you know, different categories, then every one can be happy, and you can enter one item in each category or not in all of them. Then have a winner for each category.
That way, people can try different things and bring out their inner self. It's just a thought, but hey, I can speak out can't I.
Anyway, I say yes to the writing competition!

I'm all for a "more open" one.

But I'm not sure about having a ton of competitions just to fit to everyone's taste in writing. It's like the SOTW - Some people don't always like the subject picked, but they enter anyways. If we have, say, a contest for every genre, we might only have one person enter in each contest, or the results will be very spread out. Then there won't be much competition at all.
So I think it would be best to just cycle through different kinds of stories and such with one competition every month or so, and if you like to write it, or can, than go ahead and enter. I liked Phee's example of a very general topic that is not restrictive, like a story that invokes a strong feeling. That should be the basis for many of the suggestions.

But rules are needed, I think.
How about something like this:
1. It must be Inheritance-related.
2. Some word limit. Say, 3000.
