So Im wondering when (if ever) we'll have a writer's competition? Or is anyone else interested in one?

I think it would be great to test the writers a bit, to have them expand and break out of their comfort zones.

Anyone else agree?

I'd like to see one, although whether I'd be good enough to enter, I don't know... There are some pretty good writers here. Who would be judging? One of the mods...?

Hm. At best it'd be possible for poetry. It'd be a tough sell for original content though.

Yeah, the last one we did, with a theme for Christmas, did terribly. I don't think anyone entered.

Would you guys prefer a more open competition?

Why would it be tough for original content? Poetry would be nice too.

What do you mean by a "more open competition"?

I think we could come up with a list of ideas for a writing competition. As long as we have a limit for however long our entries are, and a certain theme and what not...wouldnt that work out?

For example, we could write a short story that invokes in a reader a certain feeling (happiness, fear, love, anger); basically, it could be themes that could help a writer work on certain aspects of a story?

I dont know. You guys know better than I. But I have been wanting to see more of the creative minds of our writers for quite a while..

No offense, but I really, really didn't like the idea of something like Christmas as a competition idea. Something of some genre of fantasy, or something more akin to what people on here normally write would have been better.

Well, if we are doing a writing competition, I'm in.

Why can't it be split up, like poems, fantasy, fan fic, you know, different categories, then every one can be happy, and you can enter one item in each category or not in all of them. Then have a winner for each category.

That way, people can try different things and bring out their inner self. It's just a thought, but hey, I can speak out can't I.

Anyway, I say yes to the writing competition!

I was interested in the idea of a writing competition when it appeared last year....But then I immediately lost interest when I saw that the story had to center around Christmas or something like that.

I'm all for a "more open" one.

By more open, I mean we won't make you start out with a paragraph that we have written to start the story, or we won't tell you exactly what the story is about. So that should be kept in mind that obviously no one really liked the way the last competition was set up.

But I'm not sure about having a ton of competitions just to fit to everyone's taste in writing. It's like the SOTW - Some people don't always like the subject picked, but they enter anyways. If we have, say, a contest for every genre, we might only have one person enter in each contest, or the results will be very spread out. Then there won't be much competition at all.

So I think it would be best to just cycle through different kinds of stories and such with one competition every month or so, and if you like to write it, or can, than go ahead and enter. I liked Phee's example of a very general topic that is not restrictive, like a story that invokes a strong feeling. That should be the basis for many of the suggestions.

Sounds like a great idea.

But rules are needed, I think.

How about something like this:

1. It must be Inheritance-related.

2. Some word limit. Say, 3000.

Question: Who would judge?

If it was Inheritance related, people couldn't really write anything. I mean, if we only write around the Inheritance for this competition, then there won't be many options.

And yes, who would be judging? And if your a judge, can you enter too?

Yea, I dont like the idea of an Inheritance only theme.

And I dont know how judging would work...possibly the same as the other artist sections? Those arent bad voting methods.

I won't enter if it is inheritance themed sorry. Maybe if you put a theme like "Vision of the future" or "Fiction" it would be much better.

My reasons against an original content contest are simply based out of my experience with writing. Any finished product, in my mind, would require a boat load of work, even if it's around the size of a short story. I just don't know if I see a lot of people really committing too it in a meaningful way.

I'd be down to write a short story and look it over a few times for a competition.
