This was something a group of us back on my old site, SE, tried out back in 2007 or so--we got a chat room together once a week, usually in the evening in the U.S. so we could incorporate people in Europe and Australia, and workshopped people's stuff. We found it was a much stronger environment for critique than forums and it gave everyone a chance to get enthusiastic about the work of others.

I was wondering, if I got something together this summer, if any of you guys would be up for trying it? I've got two plans--one, a simple chat room like we did on SE, or two, using Ustream's chat, with the audio function activated so work could actually be read by myself or anyone else who hosted. I'm leaning towards the last option because it'll add a much more dynamic feel, and allow writers to feel what it's like to have their stuff read out loud.

Is anyone up for this? We'd start next week, most likely. I'll be back in NYC and will have some time to set things up.

Ben

I'd like it, but depends entirely on the time.

I'd be interested. It would all be a matter of what time for me because unfortunately, unlike all you lucky people in the US, we here in Australia don't get the huge summer holidays you get. Which then means that I'm back at school for the next 10 weeks till the next 2 week holiday *sigh*. So timing for me will matter, but other than that, I'd be very interested in joining in on this.

Well the thing is, I have a job now and somehow I managed to get a life.

But yes, I want to see this thing going again.

Does sound good.
But, not everyone can get on at the same time as everyone else.

Try setting up a Ventrilo server. That way people can log in and chat whenever they feel like it.
You can rent servers online, or run it yourself.
Running it your self is (supposed to be) very easy.

I'm quite interested in theory - in practice I have exams in two weeks so might not be able to do it properly until June, if it's still going. =p

I'll definitely be involved. We might use this in conjunction with the free write process.

Ooh.

This sounds nice.

Tell me when it's up, I'll definitely participate.

Looks like we'll be doing this, then. I'll be setting up a site for information on submissions on my Spinwork portal ASAP. I'll let you know when it's up. We'll do it the "reading" way, where you guys can submit my stuff to me, and I'll read it aloud in a livestream, then we can talk about it.

I'll keep you all posted. In addition, anyone with Skype can do these with me whenever they'd like. I'm free all hours of the day (and night), so times zones aren't much of a barrier.

So is it like a general Skype conversation, basically? I'm still a little confused. =P

It'll be more like a chat client, I'm thinking. That way, everyone can participate. =)
