YOU MUST HAVE SIGNED UP IN THE "SIGN UP" THREAD TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CONTEST.

QUOTE ("Contest Topic")
A character lives in a secluded setting. He/she is young, in or just about to be in their teens. One night, they wake up and look out the window and see a light glow on the horizon which grows and consumes them. They wake up to discover it was all a dream, but come to the conclusion that the world is going to end. As a result, from this moment forth they believe, unshakably, that the world is a few days from the end despite what his/her friends may tell them and cannot be convinced otherwise.

In your interpretation of this story, you are free to create as many characters as you need, with as many subplots, although the story cannot stray from this main plot. The story can be fantasy, sci-fi, romance, mystery, cyberpunk, steampunk—anything you wish. You can focus on anything—your goal is to execute this in a manner that is both interesting and innovative.

The winning entry will have:
- Good sentence level writing and proper grammar—nothing spectacular is required.
- Be 2,000 to 6,000 words in length.
- A creative interpretation and execution of the concept parameters.
- Extensive use of the Original Writing section to get criticism on incomplete work (YOUR PIECE WILL NOT BE JUDGED BEFORE IT IS PM’D TO ME).

The winning entry will be read aloud on the Sevenwrite.com podcast, and will have a special sig made as a prize. There will be second and third place winners that will also get honorable mention and sigs.

THE DUE DATE IS: FRIDAY, JULY 3RD 2009

Go to it! =)

One question (yeah I know this is my 3rd p.gif), you said that the character is a "child or nearly in their teens". Does this have to be at the time the story is set, or just at the time they saw the light?

9 O'clock, and you paint the skies gray, it's not your fault, we're the ones who betray
But how can you say with such ease, want to take a stand, or you just want to please?
Your bedtime story is scaring everyone. You help me understand the evil that men do.

What do you mean by a secluded setting? Does the area, the character lives in need to be secluded or do you mean the time at which the character sees the light?

Oh, and does this have to be family friendly to read? Or can we put some darker stuff in?

After some deliberation... I like it. D.gif Good work. ^.^

I do have a question though... when you say extensive use of the Original Writing section, I'm assuming you mean with relation to whatever we're writing for this?

I have nothing to declare except my genius.

It's up to your interpretation. Duh. I thought we established that.

Being this is an Original Writing exercise, and not everybody's a part of this contest, you might find it helpful to go to the OW for crits for work-in-progress. It would help bring activity to the section, and will help you figure out if anyone gets it or not.
