For the basis of such a successful musical and film, the book doesn't seem very well known. :-/ Sad, because, in my opinion, tis much better than any of the films or the musical versions. There are differences in plot and in characters as well as may details that are lost in the other versions. Tis definitely one of my favorites now, if not my favorite, period.

I don't even think I like the film anymore . . . DX

I knew there was a book, but I haven't read it. I love the movie though, so I'll give it a go sometime. It would be interesting, wouldn't it? Just as long as they include the Opera House managers, Andre and Firmin (I think), because they were really funny!

There are managers, but not the same names. >_> And their roles are somewhat different. One of the old managers, for example, is named Poligny. XD Quite different from the film's Poligny. And Erik is portrayed differently as well, though I like him. He seems more human and you learn more about him than in the film.

Oh, good. I used Wikipedia to look up the book, and it said that Erik is supposed to be way more deformed. That would be a creepy thing to read. Can't wait to.

I loved this book. I read it not long after I first saw the film and was shocked at how different they were. PotO is still one of my favourite movies but I must say in certain ways it does pale when compared to the book.

Well, just consider the play. Yeah, he is a lot more deformed there as well; they prettied him up for the film.

I liked the book almost as much as the musical. It was wonderfully written and exciting, and it shows more than the movie does.
The only part I didn't like was the parisian's story, which was confusing. I had to read it twice before I understood what was going on in that part.

That's the problem, copies can be quite hard to find, sadly. I gained my own copy from a friend who was a minor PotO fan and who was given the book, though she liked the musical much more. Mostly because of Gerard. XD So she gave me the book, being the nicest person ever. I had been lookin for a copy for ages. Maybe try Barnes and Nobles? methinks they have an addition.

Gaston wrote the book around 1910, then in 1925 twas made into a silent film. Then 1986, Webber released the musical version. Based off of the book, which he probably knew of because of the silent film, which was considered a classic. Then most recently, Webber produced the film adaption based off of his musical in 2004. Did that help at all? XP

I got my copy in the kids section at Barnes and Noble. Penguin Classics was the publisher.

Haven't read the book (though want to), haven't seen the movie, but for a friends birthday we went to see it in a theatre and I have to say it was AMAZING. If you have read the book I would definatly recommend it, although as I haven't read the book it may turn out to be a big dissapointment.
WHY?¿ That is what I want NEED to know.
WHY do I need to know?WHY is there some inexplicable need in me to know this¿WHY am I asking such a questionWHY does it rhyme with '?PIE la moo seeding miss¿'
and WHY do you want to know my question? WHY have you looked at this for so long? You see the real question is . . . .

WHY? are you reading this?

As I said in the first post, the book is quite different from the musical versions. :-/ So I wouldn't base your opinion on that. tongue.gif Though believe me, tis still an amazing book. <3 Luff.
