I'll start out with a render I did a few minutes ago in Blender, a free 3D art suite. I tend to focus on the abstract, especially 3D which, to me, gets bogged down in texturing, lighting, and simulating real life.

These are quick passes before I do the final with a different render, more reflections, AA, better Ambient Occlusion, and tripling the resolution, so they are a little rough. The finals can take several days to render...

And another work in the same project.

This model is actually embeded in the previous model with different materials. It's a lot less "pretty" but I like it, not really sure.

(I realize this probably should be in the Graphics subfourm but I will be posting some work in more traditional media as well.)

Please let me know what you think!

More to come!

I like the first one, it's shiny and pointy and, I don't know I like the way it looks.

The second is not so good, it looks like a ball with some stuff sticking out and then it got blurred.

I know it's not good critisism but it's the best I can think up.

The first one is very unique, along with the shape, lighting and color, along with the spiky stuff pointing out (Didn't know what to call it, lol). That redish black adds a nice color, and that's probably what I like the most about it, along with some of the silver in there, too. It looks like it's missing something, though, and I'm not sure what.

The second one looks kind of foamy, like not a solid sort of shape, because of the solid color of gray. And the spikes that stick out by the bottom left corner looks different from the other spikes. It just makes it look like a mistake, unless you intentionally did that, I'm not quite sure. But I do like the 3D look that it has, along with the first one.

This looks really cool. But I'm no expert in this though. I've tried veeery simple 3D manipulation and stuff, but I'm actually learning about it right now at school so maybe I'll be able to make more sense after I'm done with this short course.

I like the first one waay better. I both like the shape and the texture/colors better. Even if it's abstract I like the way the first form in some ways are closer to reality and such. The second one looks a little unfinished, but I like the bright red glowing effect you had.

Great job! How long have you done these sort of things?

Hey, thanks. The first is a much more polished project (Maybe 3 hours instead of one and a half for the second). I didn't actually design any of the color placement though. I built the mesh and set simple rules for its material properties. The mesh (the object you see) is actually very similar to real life window glass and is almost colorless. All the coloring comes from a single red lamp light slightly off-set from the center. So all color is actually determined by the rendering engine. I do know the rules to intensity and transparency so I had an idea but the fine points are left to the computer. ^^

I went back through and deleted some of the mesh randomly. (Shaving it off rather haphazardly) This gives it the "sharp" look but it also means you get some impossible geometries (Shapes bending in and through themselves for instance) this might be why it is a little empty.

Your right about the second one though. I went back through and highlighted those bottom spikes. Originally they were much more natural but I wanted to give a sense of direction to the piece. I guess I over did it.

The second was haphazard. I made it as more of a concept to see if I could effectively color a piece using only a single light. (All the red comes from a lamp light hidden in the mesh)

I've been using Blender for about a year and a half. I tried taking a formal class (There was an elective at my school) but it basically devolved into really technical tutorials about advanced texturing and modeling natural forms. It was pretty open ended with the only grade being your semester end project. I and a few other classmates got together and took the abstract path when we started getting bored of the technical stuff. It worked out well because everyone else came out with half finished work since they tried stuff like effective person modeling and animation (I have huge respect for those that can pull it off though) and we came out with a bunch of really cool looking stuff. D.gif

And as a present: an HD render of the first one for all the eye candy.

I'll be posting some pencil drawings and some more 3D stuff soon.

The new one looks a lot more like glass it's clear instead of grey and seems sharper. It makes it look more realistic therefore more convoluted. I like the effect.

Was that software created just to make abstract stuff. Because with the softwares I use, if the shape passes through itself or the lines are open-ended the picture won't render.

I did some material tweaking (Mainly increasing transparency) for the HD version to make it a little more interesting.

Blender is meant for realistic 3D modeling but I distort it for my own purposes. A lot of stuff doesn't show up in the render that does show on the actual model but I deal with it and the uncertainty helps.

Alright some different stuff today. This first piece is a stylistic experiment of mine. I tend to do hyper-realistic sketches (I'll post one of those soon.) but for this one I limited myself to only outlining and straight lines. The shading on this is admittedly pretty bad as I rushed this drawing in a little under two hours. Still, I'm interested in what people think.

I'm planning to fill in a landscape behind the wolf. I'm pondering whether to continue the angular style or clash with it by doing a realistic landscape. Opinions? Thanks. (The image is cropped up close, I have plenty of blank space around it.)

Here is the reference shot.

Okay, these guys were really quick sketches done on a boat off the coast of Thailand for scuba diving. There pretty basic and each took about five minutes. These are over a year old and got pretty smudgy. I cleaned it up a bit but there are some filling artifacts.

Yeah, these are a bit 2D and rougher than my usual stuff. Sorry I can't post an example of my regular work, scanner isn't working. Thanks for looking!

I think the wolf sketch was good. The shading isn't bad, so I'm not sure why you're saying it's bad. Yeah, it might have been rushed and you could have taken some extra time on it, but I love the style of the straight lines, but the neck seems huge to me. If you made the lines go in more instead of the way you did, it would look skinnier. You could see the body really well, except for the back legs. You might want to work on the shading back there and the lines.

The fishy stuff is all really cool. I think if you colored them in, it would look interesting. Just the pencil is completely fine, though, so don't worry about it. On some of them, the tail, back fin, whatever seems to be smaller than the rest of the body. The proportion is just too small, like the first one. I love the green turtle so much, so it has to be my favorite.

Keep it up ).gif.

Thanks again!

I tend to get overly self-concious about my drawings and call whatever I don't like "bad". ^^
Your right, I do have a problem with over-emphasizing perspective. The wolf shot is kinda up close so the neck and head are naturally bigger, I probably will cut in the lines a bit now that I look at it. (I never noticed it was wrong.)

With the Naturalist drawings, same thing. Without backgrounds I guess its hard to tell but some of them are presented on a slant, I went with that on the shark. Most of the others actually are very close to their actual proportions. Many fish around the area I was diving in have small strong fins to avoid predators.

Alrighty, another abstract "thing".

It was originally a car interrupting a picture I was trying to take on the highway at night. As you can see, not much of it is left.

Do you think the blur in the upper right is too distracting/out of place?

Otherwise, I'm relatively pleased with it. ^^

Massive update!

Descent. I showed a similar version in the Graphics forum. I think I'll move it back here.

On the same theme, Ascent. This is actually a front on view of the same project that Descent came out of.

Don't practically like this one, but oh well.

And a weird one.

That's it for now. Will probably have some photos in a few days.

As always, any comments on any of my weird, weird, art is appreciated!
