Lol is there no topic on Charles Dickens? I read most of his books and liked them a lot! Did you read Bleak House? It's great also... By the way, if you like Dickens you should try Anthony Trollope too, just read some of his books and thoroughly enjoyed them!

Seriously. Tis just about my favorite book ever.
On Dickens, well, he was just an amazing author. The fact that his works are still as famous and loved as they are goes to show this.

I've tried reading his other books (Oliver Twist, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities (and that one sounded interesting), so on and so forth) but have found that I can never, ever get very far, thoug not for lack of trying. I just don't like his writing style, but then most 19th century texts make me want to bang my head repeatedly against a wall. O for the days of Chaucer!
Was/Is he a great author? I can see how he can be seen as such, especially regarding his depiction of social classes and the like, but I honestly can't stand him.

Same here. Not everyone has the same taste and interests when it comes to reading books, so not everyone will like Dickens.

Anyway, they stories themselves are good, but reading through the whole books themselves is really difficult. Great Expectations, now, was downright painful. You can literally read 200 pages and the plot will not move at all. 200 pages, and all they do is walk down a road and have dinner, and talk about things that haven't the remotest relavance to the overall plot.
Tale of Two cities was better, though I'm not sure the ending was climactic enough to be worth the pain and suffering of the first 2/3 of the book. I though Goblet of Fire had a far more interesting buildup and a much better climax. Hell, I think Harrry Potter is better then Dickens, in some cases.
