I couldn't believe that there wasn't a topic on Charles Dickens. So far I've read Oliver Twist, Hard Times, Dombey and Son, and Great Expectations. Great Expectations is my favorite. I believe he is one of the greatest writers of all time. What do you think?

Lol is there no topic on Charles Dickens? I read most of his books and liked them a lot! Did you read Bleak House? It's great also... By the way, if you like Dickens you should try Anthony Trollope too, just read some of his books and thoroughly enjoyed them!

READ A CHRISTMAS CAROL. D:

Seriously. Tis just about my favorite book ever.

On Dickens, well, he was just an amazing author. The fact that his works are still as famous and loved as they are goes to show this.

I've never read any of his books (xD) but I have seen various film adaptations like a Christmas carol and little dorrit (I think that was dickens.)

I read Great Expectations for school, and I absolutely hated it. It just dragged on and on and on... The ending was pretty depressing too.

You hated Great Expectations?? I haven't read it yet but i can't imagine it being so bad when his other books are so good... Perhaps you just don't like Dickens' style of writing...

I'm another one who read Great Expectations (ha! Great Expectations indeed) for school and absolutely loathed every word of it (saying every letter would be a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much.) I found it boring, dull, annoying, uninteresting and generally horrible (same could be said for one Mr Pirrip). With a first line like 'My father's name being Pirrip-' that almost sent me to sleep, well, my expectations for the book were never terribly great. Pip, old chum, you made me want to slit my wrists.

I've tried reading his other books (Oliver Twist, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities (and that one sounded interesting), so on and so forth) but have found that I can never, ever get very far, thoug not for lack of trying. I just don't like his writing style, but then most 19th century texts make me want to bang my head repeatedly against a wall. O for the days of Chaucer!

Was/Is he a great author? I can see how he can be seen as such, especially regarding his depiction of social classes and the like, but I honestly can't stand him.

I'm of a similar make. After reading books as modern as Tom Clancy, it was just so hard to get into that style of writing. It didn't help that I read it in summer school, listening to Audio Book, a few chapters at a time, every day for six weeks. The level of detail, was just excessive for me. I couldn't get into it.

Same here. Not everyone has the same taste and interests when it comes to reading books, so not everyone will like Dickens.

All I've read of his books is "Tale of Two Cities." I liked it, and would like to read more of his books.

His books are a bit tedious to read. Apparently they wrote as many words as possible because they got paid by how many words they wrote.

Anyway, they stories themselves are good, but reading through the whole books themselves is really difficult. Great Expectations, now, was downright painful. You can literally read 200 pages and the plot will not move at all. 200 pages, and all they do is walk down a road and have dinner, and talk about things that haven't the remotest relavance to the overall plot.

Tale of Two cities was better, though I'm not sure the ending was climactic enough to be worth the pain and suffering of the first 2/3 of the book. I though Goblet of Fire had a far more interesting buildup and a much better climax. Hell, I think Harrry Potter is better then Dickens, in some cases.
