This is rather self-explanatory. Why do you write?

I write because it's one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things I can do, and I hope to get published some day. If I do get published, my writing has the potential to inspire people, and through that, to change the world. I love writing and literature, as an art, and I hope to be able to eventually gain the skill to write something that is good enough to be called art. (To be a classic, per se.)

Note that my conscious reasoning may be naive or immature. *Shrugs* I haven't really worked it out completely in my thoughts yet of why. It isn't necessarily a question anyone needs to ask to write, after all.

So - Why do you guys write?

James

I write because I've got to do something with the wayward thoughts and ideas that scuttle into my head, and putting them down on paper is easier than shouting them from a soapbox.

I enjoy exploring the regions of my imagination and expressing things that I've learned in my life for others to read and hopefully enjoy themselves.

I like to play with words. I can fulfill this desire by writing.
I want to be recognized as a writer. ;).gif

Really writing is the one of most effective ways of putting your thoughts out to the world. It helps you be a better person. Writing teaches you to think creatively and critically. In the end it can help you with your life.

Pretty much. I don't like to write either but no matter what I find myself going back to it. It sticks on me and won't go away.

It's an immensely satisfying thing for me. It's theraputic, it helps to clarify my thoughts, in general, it's just a great way to express yourself and even understand yourself better. Not to mention if it's like a journal, I love looking back and reading them again.

Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!"

I don't know why I write. Writing in itself sucks more D@#! than kingfloat at a gay bar. It's really F@#!ing tedious and monotonous, and when writing with paper and pencil, the left part of my left hand gets covered with graphite and the words on the paper become smudged.
But it gives me a reason to create, which I love.

I write for 2 reasons: 1) I love expressing myself with words. 2) If I didn't write I would lose the world that I've created in my mind.

I write to just get my the numerous ideas in my mind down on paper. I love writing and hope that one day I will be skilled enough to publish.

When I first started writing, it was because I was bored and I just wanted to see where I could go with it. I wanted to make my own story to answer my own questions. Now that I've posted it up on IF and I have quite a number of readers, it's because I have readers that want to see the rest of the story and see what happens next. It keeps me going and I don't mind because as I go deeper into the story, more and more of myself gets put into the characters and everyone seems to like that.

Talk about a loaded question. If you can call the textual diarrhea I produce "writing", then I would give you a reason.

I write because I love the feeling of twisting simple letters and words into a tapestry of vivid images and feelings. Being able to put yourself in your characters's positions is also very satisfying and also revealing about you as a person. When I write, it is also a way to escape from a realm I consistently grow bored, angry or sad in, and unlike reading, you get to decide where you will escape to and who you will be in that adventure. Lastly, I write to prove to myself that I am good at something, arguably better at it than others, which, while a dubious reason, is also sadly a very strong one.
