The biggest thing to me was proper English. As a Finn, English is my third language. When I was ten I didn't have anything to read and my copy of the Belgariad 1 was a bit worn out. I bought an English version of it and it was very hard to read, but I continued. Slowly I increased my vocabulary until I was okay. Then I continued buying more books, and nowadays pretty much all books I read are English.

Hm, I think the best thing I've learned from books is to be thoughtful about things. And of course, English is very good to learn from them too, whether or not it is ones first language.

And for those who read a wide range of genres - They probably get a lot of general knowledge from that.

My vocabulary has definitely gotten better. Whenever I see a word I don't know I just HAVE to look it up. Reading also makes me think outside the box.
If anyone is interested. I updated my art thread.

A lot of the views I hold on God, morality, good and evil, and other such things, I thought on and discovered while reading Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy.

As with everyone else my vocabulary has gotten better from reading books. I can also understand conflicts better and try not to just assume things before you see both sides of a problems.

As for factual information, I learned a lot. Which elements are helpful in crerating fire, how to make a map, some math trick for adding, a bunch of other stuff I don't wan to list.

As said there I get a whole lot of general knowlage from books (we are just talking about fiction here, right?) and lots of words 'n wisdom. Besides it means I don't spend half as much time on the computer which can only be a good thing thumbup.gif

Trouble is a whole lot of words I learn in books I find incredibly hard to fit into a normal conversation, for instance where are you going to fit 'a verbal monolith of ambivlence' into one? I tried using a whole lot of the vocab I learned for a while but I usually just got a 'what?', 'Urrrrrm........', 'Huh?' 'You were saying?' or just got looked at as if I was mad thumbsup.gif

Well "a verbal monolith of ambivalence" is more like a phrase. But if you are truly learning language from a book, you will understand the meaning of those individual words and be able to use them. Learning language from a book isn't exactly so...literal.

^Yes I know but I was just picking a suitable 'bookish-words-that-aren't-used-usually-in-conversation'.

Still, quite alot of the books I've read have words I wouldn't use in them, or I would only use them in my writing.

Vocabulary, as it has been mentioned already, is a good thing, as well as the random information/general knowledge one picks up.

I think books also teach you to use your imagination, to think and predict. They are a fun way to spend your time without a lot of effort. Books are friendly ).gif

And I've learned that one should never underestimate the power of a book. I've been given books for a long time, and though perhaps sometimes people expect nicer presents, books can make a difference.

Vocabulary, general phrases and skill of understanding and creating literature (that sounds like I'm an expert but when I try and actually write, I suck).

But the least subtle, biggest one I can think of off the top of my head is Roman numerals. I learnt them from Asterix (mainly asking others what it meant) and so I knew Roman numerals a couple of years before I started learning them in school. At at least one point I corrected the teacher. ).gif
