2. A slight hope
As he stood there two emotions took hold one a feeling of elation that the Dragons did not feel safe breeding in the normal areas and were nesting in seemingly random areas like this one. The other emotion was of fear that held him in place even though he wanted to run because he was sitting in a Dragons sacred place and a Dragon probably won't be gone for long. Curiosity took hold and he unglued his feet from the ground and started to look around the nest taking in everything.
This nest is the same as that of many birds but in a way completely different! This thought continued to run through his mind as he scouted it.
But if this is a nest where are the young Dragons or if they are indeed like a bird where are the eggs? No matter where he looked he was unable to find anything that might be something in the birth of a Dragon no fragments nor was there any remnants of food for a young creature. He searched the tall grass and to the tops of the humongous pines that surrounded him but nothing was remotely helped him in his search.
Thoroughly stumped he decided to scout the area to make sure there was nothing hostile to him for since he had missed the nest he might have also missed anything unfriendly. During this time he gathered wild berry's and fruits he even found a extremely clear stream that at first glance made Eragon believe there was a mirror in the middle of no where. He decided he would follow the stream to its end the next day and start his journey for he did not want to be anywhere near here when a Dragon ready to birth came because he felt he would not survive to see another day.
Eragon headed back to the glade and gathered everything that he had brought and then headed back to the stream he was far enough away he doubted he would be found. He then set out making some food using the bread he had brought with him and the berry's and fruits and washed it down with the water from the stream.
It was only then roughly three in the afternoon yet he still had much to do and he felt he should not start a journey just to stop as soon as it had started.
I will stay here and then tomorrow I will head out on my journey to no where. He did not want to stay but logic told him to.
He felt a sudden urge to sit and meditate as many of his elders had taught him even though he was not a great spell caster, magic was imbued into his blood. He opened his mind to the wilderness striving to see everything yet nothing the ultimate way to become calm. He felt the ants set about their work repairing the damage to their hill from a squirrel that had run over it and many of the workers set about collecting the crumbs that he had let fall during his meal. Each ant was separate but in the same way was bonded to the others intricately giving their all to the good of whole of the society doing its job no matter how big or small that job was.
A Hawk glided down to a branch near him waiting patiently for his prey to emerge from the ground. The mouse sensing danger refused to surface instead start tunneling in a different direction.A bee pollinating the flowers and spreading it to the next while the flower used that to survive and produce seeds. Yet there was an unfamiliar presence so foreign yet it felt so much a part of the world it freighted him although he did not even know where it came from.
Aside from the odd entity he was able to relax and release the strain of the past few years and come to peace with the world. When he had heard everything but nothing he closed his mind and then prepared himself to start his Rimgar using the moderate form so as to not completely wear him out. It helped him relax himself and allowed him to get out a lot of energy that had been kept in as he had traveled much of the time it had been used to walk but he hadn't used his entire body in one exercise in many months.
The Foreign entity still bothered him as he continued in his practice he had not yet felt something as powerful as that which he had felt but also in something so small these two did not add up nor feel right.
After much debate with his conscience he decided it would be best if he tried to pinpoint the exact location of this creature. He slowly opened his mind again reluctant to feel that presence again as he stretched his mind out he found it again. His mind reached out to it to find the exact location as his mind touched the creature he was forced to retreat as a probe pierced his thought and broke many of his loose barriers he still had up. He struggled to put up a barrier to ward off the probe but he had no need to after a few seconds the probe slowed and let up its attack and slowly retreated the young elves mind. He had pinpointed the creatures location but the price he paid for it he was still unsure. It was in an area roughly a quarter of a mile away downstream.
Eragon shuddered as he remembered the ferocity of the attack and just how foreign and different its mind was. He had been unable to gain any footing in the mind of the creature as its mind had been heavily guarded what scared him the most was that he had been unable to put up a barrier around his mind. He felt a shiver run down his spine as he realized that whatever the creature was it could easily destroy Eragon. As he recovered from the attack he tried to figure out what needed to be done.
Don't be a coward Eragon! Part of him screamed but yet his conscience told him
If that thing could do that to your mind what do you think it will do to you physically. He struggled for several long moments until he decided that he would follow the stream and when he got to where he had felt the creature he would hide and search around the area from his hiding point.
Although I will wait until a new day has come so as to rest and ponder more on what has just happened. And with that he started preparing his dinner much the same as his lunch.
After he had finished dinner he entertained himself by reciting a few of his favorite poems that had been created by many of those he had loved. With this he mourned for many of their deaths but honored their memory by saying these poems for them. Many creatures gathered around him and listened to his poems which had an air of power but were extremely pleasant to the ear. When he had recited a few of the smaller poems he knew he realized that it had grown late and the moon was high in the sky. So with that he laid down and let his waking dreams take him.
He was awoken by a bright light shining above the sun had risen and hung low in the morning sky. It was slightly overcast and the sun gave the sky a look of blood passing across it. It was extremely beautiful and awe inspiring at the same time. He quickly gathered some of the fruit hanging in the trees surrounding him and made a hasty breakfast as he neared the end of it he slowly felt his nerves getting the best of him as he feared of what might happen as he searched for this creature that could destroy any weaker creature.
Eragon decided to not dwell on these facts saying Many Elves have fought greater creatures than them and survived why can't I? This thought heartened him as he prepared his things to go. He refilled his water packs and picked the ripest fruit enough for three days journey. He strung his bow and loosed his sword in its sheath in case the creature might come for him physically yet he hardly believed he would survive until then because of the power of the creatures mind.
If only it was like any other creature many throughout the Elven nation believed that I was a amazing swordsmen and archer some even thought I had no equal. This thought made him grin but slowly he lost all feelings of humor as he continued to walk.
Events that had transpired the night before kept popping up in his brain as he traversed the land to the point he had felt the creature.
Why did the creature stop attacking when it had gained the advantage over me I was unable to do anything to it? This was the thought the dominated his thoughts as he grew closer.
As he neared the clearing he found a tree strong enough to hold him as he climbed he glimpsed that the clearing was only about forty feet in total and it was unremarkable except that there was a pond that dominated most of the clearing it was just as clear as the stream and had many rocks at the bottom of multiple different colors none that he could find were extraordinary. Eragon open his mind and stretched it out yet again yet he could not find the creature no matter how far he stretched either it had completely hidden its mind or it had left. He felt no danger in the clearing so he hopped down the tree and into the clearing. There were no creatures there but there were tracks that suggested that it was a major water source for the surrounding wildlife.
Relief having washed over him that there was nothing dangerous he decided he should wash up since this would probably be the last place he would be able to do so. His dark brown hair and his light blue eyes glinted in the sunlight just before a cloud covered it. I guess I should take a bath before a storm hits or it may be a very bad time to bathe.
He started pulling clothing off of his powerful body he was tall and strong even by Elven standards. As he pulled off the last of his clothing he dived into the water. It was surprisingly warm and refreshing at the same time, it helped ease his battered body. He swam around the pond it looked small but was surprisingly deep he estimated that it was probably fourteen feet deep he was able to swim to the bottom easily yet he found nothing of note. As he returned to the surface the sun came back out from behind the cloud and Eragon found himself staring into the depths of the pond among the stones he found himself blinded unable to see he turned away from it and waited until the sun went behind the clouds again to look into the depths of the pond. He found himself staring at a ordinary white stone it didn't look large so feeling it might have some value he swam to the bottom. He tried to pick the rock up but was unable to and so he set about in between swimming up for breathe he cleared away the rocks he soon found himself staring at a rock roughly the size of his stomach he was unable to admire it for more than a second before he was forced to swim to the top.
He put the stone down and set about clothing himself as he finished he looked at the stone to try and determine what it was. It was harder than any diamond Eragon had every seen or felt but it was perfectly shaped in an oval shape, it was brighter than any gem he had seen either and when held in the sun was unbearable to look at. He contemplated these things it would be worth much more to the Dwarfs than it would be to any Elf for it was by far the greatest gem ever crafted yet it was not clear like many other gems were it had a thin layer of cloudy white surrounding it yet it had little veins a parchment colored white crossing around the gem. If any experience of his was to tell of the worth it probably valued greater than the Dwarfs Isidar Mithrim which many beheld as the greatest gem of all time. Although Eragon wanted to know what could have made this gem and he opened his mind and tried to probe it but as soon as he had he found a mind he thought he had escaped. It was the mind of the creature that had attacked him. This time however it was cautious and instead it was warm and had a glow about it.
Eragon almost dropped the egg for that is what it must be but what kind of creature could have an egg like this and before he could go any further with that thought he realized as though he had known all along, that the egg he held before him was that of a Dragon! With that revelation Eragon felt the mind of the young Dragon feel smug.
