Curious faces watched from the windows, as the Aura Guardians watched their five elected candidates leave the building, accompanied by their Pokemon partners. Chosen from among the Guardians as the best people to become the next High Guardian, the final choice lay with the spirits.
Cloaked against the cold, Corin followed the others along the well-worn trail through the forest, carrying a lanturn to light the way. Arianne walked beside him, the Absol's blue-clawed paws crunching through the snow. The path ended at the base of a hill, where the Sanctuary's entrance lay. They entered, the short passageway leading to a spacious chamber, with rough stone walls covered with intricate carvings. A few squeaks broke the silence, as bats and bat Pokemon noted the visitors. The five Guardians sat in a circle in the middle of the chamber, their Pokemon settling down beside them, and closed their eyes. Arianne lay her head down on her paws, quietly waiting.
Corin's eyes opened. Everything seemed to have paled into grey mist, except his fellows, glowing brightly, though their features were still distinct. The outline of a Lucario could be seen, standing in the middle of their circle, translucent and shimmering. It raised one spiked forepaw, gesturing straight at him. Cold fire burned through Corin, and he fought to not cry out. :We choose you to be High Guardian, Corin Windpiper, it said simply, though its mouth did not move. :Serve Alaria well. The other Guardians faded out, but the Lucario remained. :Strife looms, it murmured. The daughter of fire, who is brought by the one of wind, and the son of ice, brought by kings, will stand against the troubles to come. The spirit faded away, and Corin jerked awake.
Not till they returned to the Guardian headquarters did any of them speak, but when they did, all put forth exclamations of surprise and praise, for the youngest High Guardian in two hundred years. Even the Pokemon barked and yipped, screeched and growled, while Arianne snarled at any who became too excited.
Alone at home finally, Corin rubbed his fingers along the shimmery grey lines that twined around and down his left arm, that Marked him as a Wind-Type Aurian, gifted with abilities that let him speak with birds and Flying-Type Pokemon, cast certain spells, and control the wind. New Marks had appeared, gleaming blue lines interwoven among his original ones, along with a rune of leadership, shining faintly on the back of his hand. Trouble will come when it will, he told himself, thinking of the spirit's prophecy. You might as well enjoy this moment.
This is a world where there are Pokemon, Pokemon who work alongside people. The technology is mostly medieval, augmented by Aurians (mages and such), who are Aura-born, deriving their power from the Aura, the energy that is within and of all things, especially the living. (You probably understand this concept if you ever watched Star Wars or Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.) Aura Guardians are Aurians who have taken on the tasks of law enforcement, watching over their people and serving as a connection to the spirits. They keep the peace, and take the lead in times of trouble, aiding their kings in resolving those troubles. A High Guardian leads the Aura Guardians, one in each kingdom.
Alaria, known also as the First Kingdom and the Land of Fire and Aura, is where this story takes place, bounded by mountains to the north and east, the sea to the west, and the plains of Volair to the south. While Pokemon of all kinds are to be found here, Fire-Type Pokemon are more common here than elsewhere, and Lucario are found almost nowhere else. Similarly, the Aurians of Alaria are almost always Fire- or Aura-Type. There are other places, with other affiliated Types, but I won't go into that (unless we, by some miracle, finish this plot).
One unique feature of Alaria is the Youth Assessment system. All teens, between 10-18 years of age, are sent to compounds located at all major cities, and stay there for at least two years, up till six years. These compounds, built alike to any town, with lodgings for all, with all necessary supplies and educational facilities made available, and various people working with the teens, are secretly observed by a select committee of people, who judge which individuals are suitable for certain jobs, such as being Aura Guardians. Surprisingly, the system has been quite successful, with relatively few who have not been placed in positions they dislike and are poor performers in.
Now, basically, we have two main characters, who are obviously the two named in the prophecy, a Fire Aurian and an Ice Aurian. We are 13-15-year-olds entering the Assessment, while simultaneously trouble begins to brew in the country. I am thinking of having this character, Arvel Aurison, who is planning to overthrow the king, and we go stop him (but I'm rotten with writing plots, so if anyone has suggestions, please share). And we'll be making friends during the Assessment, so that will roughly be what everyone else will be. Make sure you have Pokemon, everyone in this world does, but we'll get to that and other details as we go along.
For anyone who might possibly be joining, we have polished off many of the setting details in this and the characters threads, go search the pages.
