OK, imagination.. The Amber Spyglass, if the title's correct, was definetely one of the worst I've ever read. In case I have gotten the title, wrong, I meant the last book in his Dark materials series. Basically, what completely destroyed it for me was how radically the author changed from fantasy to a rant on religion and destroying God.

I would have to say the worst book I've read that I can remember is The Quest by Wilbur Smith. Not so much the prose, but for the sheer ridculousness of it, and I guess the disappointment. I'm not going to stick in spoilers, 'cause if you want to read it, you're mad.
I absolutely adored River God and The Seventh Scroll, but this one? He got the facts/canon continually wrong. Names changed, hair colour changed, the main character was suddenly all powerful and able to regrow his teeth and his balls and penis (he was once a eunuch), becomes young once more, gets back together with the reincarnated love of his life (who had previously sworn undying love for another man) and it just goes on and on. There were also killer frogs (and I though Goodkind's chickens were bad).
If I have be totally honest, it felt like you were reading the author's wet dream and at points it bordered on paedophillic. It was so bad, it's put me off all his other books.

I am trying to think of the title of the worst book ever.. but it escapes me. Well anyway it was this horrific book about vampires in current times relating with humans and then the next one had vampires and werewolves (holy crap jjust like Twilight I know! but it wasn't and was a million times worse) but anyway it was terrible. The characters kept changing, there were grammatical errors, plot holes, and the characters were about as deep as a puddle.
It was absolute trash and before you chirp me for reading a book like that, it was only because my friends had to read an equally fail books. We went to the library for class and we were done, so we each picked out the stupidest books we could find for eachother and we all had to read them

If a toddler book counts, I saw a book once that was talking about a kid who did something for a long time. There were about fifteen pages, 2 of which consisted of only one word; "long". The previous page began with something like, "He did this for a long..." and then it continued to say the same word for two pages.

Perhaps you would care to explain why?

I quite liked the amber spyglass. The concept of god though was totally anti religious, and I didn't agree with it, but the plot was ingenius in my opinion, and it was written well. Was the rant on religion nesiscary? I don't think so, but it's nowhere near the worst book ever written

Yeah, I actually loved The Amber Spyglass and all the anti-religious views. I think it's amazing, especially the angel hierarchy.
As much as I'd like to contribute to this thread with a title, I can't say I've stumbled upon a book that I would consider the worst book ever written. Sure, there have been some that I have hated (such as one with a really long title by Garcia Marquez, a writer who won the Nobel Prize) but I am still able to appreciate their literary value.
However, there is one book I had to forcefully read a few pages of that tops my list: The Mexican Constitution.
