PM Spam

Hey guys,

We've been having a lot of issues with bots registering and spamming everyone's inbox with dubious links. We're working on getting them deleted and finding a patch or mod to help prevent them from happening.

The upgrade to IPB 3.0 should solve the problem, so that will hopefully happen soon.

For now, please ignore messages with links in them and report the bots' user id numbers. I need these to delete the messages from the database.

IF will never advertise anything through mass-PM, and will never link you to dangerous websites.

edit: Found a patch for our current version that adds PM flood control. Bots should have a very hard time sending their message to more than one person.

I got one an hour ago, but have already deleted it.
It was something 'bout a virus registered on my PC.

The user has already got banned.

Hopefully that upgrade will fix it. Perhaps you could find an alternative fix if it doesn't work such as a post-based limit on the # of messages you can send in a certain period of time. (Ie. if you have 20 posts you can send...10 messages every half hour) or something like that.

Just a thought.

I remember IPS having a fix for this, but I'll have to go find it. I thought that 2.3.6 (the version that we upgraded to recently) contained it, but since it's still a problem, I guess not.
